Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » UK/Bergen

Flying out to Bergen, you’ll make your way to your grand, neoclassical hotel where complimentary extras range from sauna soaks to afternoon sweets and an evening meal. But, positioned right on the quayside of the city’s Hanseatic wharf, you’ll also be perfectly poised to explore 14th-century Bryggen’s rabbit warren of meandering alleyways and colourful timber buildings. And, today, it’s something of an artists’ enclave, complete with galleries and charming boutiques. However, for the best city views, head up Mt. Fløyen on its tram funicular. Here, you’ll be treated to spectacular panoramas over Bergen, looking out over its rooftop jumble to its pretty frame of fjords and green-dappled mountains.

    Stay: Clarion Collection Havnekontoret, Bergen

  • Day 2 » Bergen to Sogndal

After some further time to explore Norway’s second city, you’ll set off on your scenic cruise to Sogndal. Taking a leisurely few hours, you’ll first weave through the islands that dot Norway’s Atlantic coast before turning inland along the mighty Sognefjord. Lined with kilometre-high cliffs, snow-capped peaks gaze down on trickling waterfalls and shimmering waters are fringed by bright greenery. It’s the pretty scenery that welcomes you to the contemporary sleek of your accommodation; found right on the Sogndalselvi River, you’ll be able to hike, kayak and ski your way among glacial lakes and mountain slopes.

    Stay: Quality Hotel Sogndal

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 3 » Sogndal to Loen

After breakfast today, you’ll be treated to a bus tour through the region’s UNESCO-listed scenery. Sweeping past everything from giant mountains and cascading waterfalls to rolling farmland and idyllic townships, you’ll arrive into Loen, a charming village at the mouth of the Nordfjord’s Lodalen Valley. Here, you’ll be treated to a ride on the just-opened Loen Skylift. This spectacular cable car climbs 1,000 metres to the summit of Mt. Hoven, offering truly dramatic views over glaciers and forested fjords – the backdrop for ranging hikes and seasonal snowshoe shuffles. Come the evening, return to the spa comforts, valley views and wine-cellar indulgences of your mountain-resort hotel.

    Stay: Hotel Alexandra, Loen, Norway

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 4 » Loen to Geiranger

Boarding the UNESCO bus tour once more, you’ll continue north, wending between glacier tongues, plunging valleys and mountains steeped in Norse mythology. You’ll arrive into Geiranger, home to what is often considered the jewel in the crown of Norway’s fjords. The waters are deep blue, the vegetation lush green and the clifftops etched with waterfalls. And, after exploring with everything from boat cruises to hikes and bike rides, you’ll end the day with the fjord views of your spa accommodation’s terrace restaurants.

    Stay: Hotel Union, Geiranger

  • Day 5 » Geiranger to Ålesund

Today, you’ll head through Geirangerfjord, journeying back to the coast with Hurtigruten – Norway’s famous fleet of post ships. Then, after dipping in and out of island crags, you’ll arrive into charming Ålesund. Entirely rebuilt following a turn-of-the-century fire, it’s home to one of Europe’s finest collections of Art Nouveau architecture, its church spires, famous lighthouses and waterside residences resplendent in high gables and bright colours. And, as Ålesund is the base for the largest cod-fishing fleet in Norway, don’t miss out on its superb seafood; your rustic-chic hotel even features one of the best restaurants in town.
