Travellers to central Norway typically base themselves in Trondheim, a lively coastal town whose location makes it a great inclusion in tailor-made Norway travel itineraries.  See itinerary ideas

Trondheim itself is an historic university town with lots of charm and appeal; walk or cycle through the heart of town taking in the 11th century cathedral and colourful wooden warehouses and explore Bakklande, the old quarter, before relaxing in one of the cafés that line Midtbyen, the pedestrianized city centre. There’s excellent shopping too be had here too with designer boutiques on the streets coming off the main square.

The city’s central location makes it an ideal stepping stone on a Norwegian tour. Alesund, Bergen and the flords are all readily accessible to the west while Lillehammer and Oslo are possible itinerary inclusions as well. It’s more than 500 miles north to the Arctic Circle and the Lofoten Islands but the journey here by road or rail is spectacular.
