Snorkelling in some of the world’s clearest waters, this is your chance to get right between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. You’ll be diving in glacial water that has been filtered for decades by porous lava rock, affording an underwater visibility of a whopping 120 metres. And, with such otherworldly scenery on show, you’ll want it.
It all begins in Reykjavik, where you’ll be met at your hotel and brought out to the famous Thingvellir National Park. Along the way, your guide will keep you informed on the region’s unique geology and cultural history before you arrive at the Silfra fissure itself. Here, you’ll change into the provided dry suit and snorkelling equipment, taking a full briefing before the time comes to take the plunge. Kept warm and comfortable, you’ll spend a blissful 30–40 minutes floating among such incredible formations as Silfra Hall, Cathedral and Silfra Lagoon. At times, you can almost reach out and touch both continental plates. Just remember to look down; with the water so clear, you’ll appear to be flying over the colourful boulders below. At the end of it all, you’ll be treated to cookies and hot chocolate before your brought back to your accommodation.
