This is the unique opportunity to not just witness one of Iceland’s most impressive geographic features, but to step right into it. It’s an experience that’s only just opened up, with the construction of a system of tunnels and chambers that stretch almost 300 metres into the monolithic Langjökull Glacier.
It all begins with a complimentary pickup service from your Reykjavik accommodation, leaving the city behind to head out into the Icelandic countryside. Much more than a mere transfer, you’ll pause at Europe’s most powerful hot spring and the picture-perfect Hraunfossar waterfalls, where tiny rivulets stream out in crying cascades from a barren lava field. Then, it’s time to change on to a specially adapted all-terrain vehicle for the journey along the glacier’s ice cap. Reaching the tunnel entrance, you’ll don the provided crampons and follow your guide into the labyrinth of nooks and chambers, with your group leader pointing out the stratified ice layers that trace all of the region’s volcanic past. There’s even an ice chapel and the chance to cross a giant crevasse on a specially constructed bridge. At the end of it all, you’ll retrace your route back to Reykjavik, where you’ll be dropped back at your hotel.
