It’s only really possible to get a proper appreciation of Iceland's sheer scale from the air. And, departing from Reykjavik, this curated helicopter flight is the perfect introduction. You’ll fly out of the Icelandic capital to take in one of the country’s most active volcanic areas – the Hellisheiði Plateau. Here, hot springs gently steam, lava fields stretch towards the horizon and colourful basalt mountains pierce blue skies up above. It’s the chance to fly right off the beaten track, landing at the Hengill geothermal area where you’ll be able to get up close to hot springs and bubbling mud pools. There are no tourists here, so instead of safety ropes, you should expect only the odd herd of lost sheep. And, they’ll only be there in summer. On the way back, you’ll also be treated to a scenic pass over Reykjavik, offering a unique aerial overview of the city.
