Tried, tested and loved throughout Scandinavia and the Nordics, the ice hotel concept has finally arrived in Tromso in Norway, a city widely regarded as the best place on earth to see the Northern Lights.
Eat
Dining here is something of an event. Starting with a complimentary non-alcoholic welcome drink at the ethereally lit ice bar, overnight guests are then invited on an included snowshoe trip into the forest, complete with Northern Lights viewing, to be treated to a delicious wilderness dinner, cooked on an open fire. With a menu inspired by the region’s bounteous produce, expect the likes of seafood caught fresh from the surrounding fjords, forest-picked berries and reindeer steak cooked to perfection. Post dinner drinks can be enjoyed back in the warm wooden Lavvu complete with open-fire.
Sleep
Small but perfectly formed, Tromso Ice Hotel comprises just seven rooms, all beautifully carved and lit to perfection. And, despite the temperature inside each kept to a constantly balmy -5ºC, you’ll be warm and snug with reindeer fur blankets and Arctic sleeping bags to keep out the chill.
Do
This being the Arctic, a stay at Tromso Ice Hotel wouldn’t be complete without a full spread of exciting excursions to keep you busy, and enthralled. Along with the aforementioned snowshoeing trip, there's also a fantastic husky sledding experience included in the price, with both activities featuring complimentary meals. But, there’s absolutely no reason not to jazz your stay in Tromso up further with optional reindeer sleigh rides and snowmobile trips bringing visitors deep into surrounding forests and fjords. Warm clothes are provided, and there’s a wood-fired sauna and outdoor hot tub at the hotel to thaw chilled bones.
