One of our favourite Scandinavian hotels, fjordside Lyngen Lodge is located three hours east of Tromso, lost among the snowy peaks of the Lyngen Alps. Traditionally constructed with Norwegian timber frames, a process known as lafting which helps the hotel blend into the local environment, the rooms’ interiors wear shades of pastels, and furnishings are chosen to complement the natural surrounds. The feeling of isolation is heightened by the hotel’s size – just 18 guests stay at any one time – and the views, seen through large panoramic windows, are spectacular.
Eat
In-house chefs prepare a range of delicious courses for breakfast, lunch and dinner, inspired by Norwegian coastal culture. The lounge is a good place for elevenses, and the fully-licensed bar serves a few local tipples alongside more familiar international drops.
Sleep
The eight comfortable en suite rooms have chic furnishings and modern fittings. Shared facilities include a library and seminar room, sauna and fantastic outdoor Jacuzzi.
Do
With two outdoor enthusiasts as owners, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Lyngen Lodge’s biggest draw is the wonderful range of activities on offer, which will whisk you into the wilderness, take you up close and personal to the local fauna and flora. They include: river boat tours, sea safaris, fjord boat fishing, river salmon fishing, mountain trekking, helicopter-accessed hiking, horse riding, glacier tours, fjord water sports, sea kayaking, Northern Lights viewing and wintertime skiing.
