Along the way, you’ll stay in some of the finest hotels in the Sunnmøre Alps, enjoying first-class hospitality and authentic Norwegian cuisine, along with the services of an expert local guide. While much of your adventuring will be by car, you’ll also take to the skies on a thrilling helicopter ride, glide along the fjords by boat, and take a cable car to one of Norway’s most spectacular viewpoints at 1,000 metres above sea level. And, there’s the chance to take in the Art Nouveau masterpieces and culinary delights of Ålesund, the region’s delightful urban hub, including lunch at one of its finest restaurants.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » Depart for Ålesund

Your trip begins with a flight to Ålesund (via Oslo or Bergen), a city renowned for its attractive Art Nouveau architecture and access to some of Norway’s most alluring landscapes, characterised by the dramatic peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps and a network of majestic fjords. On arrival, a private transfer will take you straight to your hotel – a beautifully secluded, timber-clad hideaway on the banks of Norway’s fifth-longest fjord. Enjoy a welcome cocktail in a traditional ‘lavvu’ tent as you receive an introductory talk about the adventures that await in the days to come, followed by the first delicious dinner of your trip.

    Stay: Storfjord Hotel, Skodje

    Meals: Dinner

  • Day 2 » Driving the Atlantic Ocean Road

Today, you’ll embark on one of the world’s most scenic driving routes in the comfort of an ultra-sleek electric Porsche. Heading north, you’ll weave between a seemingly endless expanse of islands and islets that spill out into the Norwegian Sea, boasting magnificent views at virtually every turn. The highlight of this drive is without doubt the Atlantic Ocean Road, an engineering marvel that meanders across a particularly scenic seascape between the cities of Molde and Kristiansund, connecting the island of Averøy with the mainland, with no fewer than eight bridges. Whenever you fancy stopping for lunch, you’ll have a picnic basket of local cheeses, meats, berries and champagne to enjoy. On the way back to the hotel, the jagged peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps will gradually come into view, completing the day’s epic scenery.

    Stay: Storfjord Hotel, Skodje

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 3 » Helicopter flight & scenic drive

Ready yourself for a truly special experience as you take to the skies on a helicopter flight, providing the ultimate vantage point to marvel at the region’s resplendent landscapes as you hover directly above the fjords. Back on the ground, your electric Porsche will be waiting for you, as you set off on a spectacular drive, heading deeper into the fjords towards Trollstigen – a notoriously steep stretch of road that snakes its way up a mountainside in the Romsdalen valley via 11 hairpin bends, with sublime views along the way. You’ll then descend into the Valldal valley, back towards the fjord, where you’ll take a ferry across to the village of Stranda. Your final destination for the day is Hotel Union Øye – a charming, chalet-style property steeped in historical grandeur and set against a stunning mountain and fjord backdrop, where numerous royals and esteemed writers have stayed over the years.

    Stay: Hotel Union Øye

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 4 » Loen Skylift & Geirangerfjord cruise

Heading south today, you’ll wind through idyllic mountain valleys before arriving at Loen, a small village tucked away at the easternmost end of the Nordfjord – Norway's sixth-longest fjord. Here, you’ll take the cable car up to the summit of Mount Hoven at 1,011 metres above sea level, where you’ll be met by terrific panoramas of the surrounding fjord landscape and out towards the Jostedalsbreen Glacier to the south.

Continuing inland towards Erdal, you’ll cross the mountain pass that leads to Geiranger, the village which shares its name with perhaps the most spellbinding Norwegian fjord: Geirangerfjord. With steep mountains on either side and a series of waterfalls tumbling down into the fjord, the scenery here is simply breathtaking – and you’ll be able to take it all in while cruising along it by ferry, disembarking at Hellesylt. From here, it’s a relatively short but memorable drive along the narrow Norangsdalen valley back to Hotel Union Øye.

    Stay: Hotel Union Øye

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 5 » Day trip to Ålesund

No trip to the Sunnmøre Alps region would be complete without sampling the seafood that has been an integral part of the economy for generations – which is why, today, we’ve included lunch at the fabulous Sjøbua restaurant in Ålesund. It’s another scenic drive to get there, so we suggest allowing plenty of time for the journey. Besides savouring the local catch for lunch, you’ll also have some time to take a stroll through Ålesund and admire its colourful Art Nouveau architecture – a noticeable contrast from the style of buildings you’ll find in most Norwegian towns and cities. Later on, you’ll return to Storfjord Hotel via the elegant MS Fjord Lilly, gliding effortlessly along the fjord to round off the day’s adventures in style.

    Stay: Storfjord Hotel, Skodje

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 6 » Return to UK

Enjoy one last breakfast and a leisurely final morning at Storfjord Hotel, perhaps taking the opportunity to venture out on a kayaking excursion or treating yourself to a soothing massage or sauna session at the spa. A private transfer will then bring you back to Ålesund Airport in time for your flight back to the UK.
