As the newest addition to the HX Hurtigruten Expeditions fleet, MS Fridtjof Nansen is part of a new generation of hybrid-powered ships with innovative technology and cutting-edge hull design that cuts carbon emissions by more than 20 percent compared to other ships of the same size. It’s named after the Norwegian scientist, Arctic explorer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Fridtjof Nansen, who led the first crossing of Greenland by cross-country skis in 1888. Its stylish interiors are inspired by Scandinavian nature and feature materials such as granite, oak, birch and wool throughout the cabins and communal areas. With its superb onboard amenities, comfortable accommodation and experienced expedition team, you’ll quickly feel at home when you set sail on MS Fridtjof Nansen.

Eat

Meals on MS Fridtjof Nansen are served at a trio of restaurants: two informal restaurants, Aune and Fredheim, and another, Lindstrøm, that specialises in fine dining. The latter is included for suite guests, while non-suite guests are welcome to dine at Restaurant Lindstrøm for an additional cost. Breakfast and lunch are typically served buffet-style, while table service is standard at dinner – and you are welcome to take advantage of the onboard takeaway service if you’d prefer to dine in the comfort and privacy of your cabin. Dishes vary between Scandinavian and international flavours, with an emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks are part of the all-inclusive service, and can be enjoyed in the restaurants or while relaxing in the elegant Explorer Lounge and Bar. There’s also the option to upgrade to a premium drinks package for an additional supplement.

Sleep

MS Fridtjof Nansen can take up to 530 passengers across three different accommodation categories. The most spacious, premium options are the Expedition Suites, which can accommodate up to four people and come with special features such as private balconies, expansive windows, cosy seating areas and, in some cases, a private hot tub. You’ll also be treated to Champagne on ice and a platter of delicacies as you set sail. Arctic Superior cabins are the middle category room type, with the option of a private balcony, while Polar Outside cabins are the most affordable choice. Both of these come with double beds which can be divided into two single beds on request at the time of booking, and some also have a sofa bed. All accommodation comes with a private ensuite bathroom with a shower and toiletries, a TV, a mini bar (charges apply) and tea and coffee-making facilities. Free Wi-Fi is available onboard.

Do

The ship has a spacious observation deck and a lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows, so whatever the conditions, there’s always a suitable vantage point from which to admire the scenery and keep an eye out for wildlife. Also at the core of the onboard experience is the Science Centre, where guests and members of the HX expedition team mingle to share knowledge about the areas you’ll be exploring. Here, you’ll find a variety of cutting-edge scientific gadgets, a library and several workshop and lecture spaces. Speaking of which, numerous fascinating talks and presentations will be delivered throughout your voyage. When you’re seeking some peace and quiet, meanwhile, feel free to relax in the sauna, take a dip in the infinity pool or the hot tubs, or treat yourself to a rejuvenating massage at the spa. There’s also a well-equipped fitness room where you can enjoy some exercise onboard. And of course, while you’ll be spending most of your time on the ship, you can look forward to a whole host of excursions such as guided hikes, kayaking trips, small boat tours and plenty more. Some of these are included as part of your cruise, while others can be added to your itinerary for a supplement.
