A family-owned hotel, Camp Ripan offers cosy, private cabins in Sweden's northernmost town, Kiruna. Surrounded by a majestic mountain landscape that's blessed with summer's Midnight Sun and winter's Northern Lights, it promises a stay full of adventure.
Eat
Known to serve some of the best cuisine in the Swedish Lapland, Camp Ripan refines locally harvested produce from the region to create delicious dishes on a lunch and a la carte dinner menu. Menu's centre around Swedish, Sami and Finnish culture and reflect the seasons, following traditional recipes with international influences. Lunches vary from main courses to soups, salads and homemade breads, whilst dinners tend to be a more sophisticated affair with several courses. Perhaps begin with pickled herring served with quails egg, followed by herb-roasted reindeer with potatoes and black currant gravy and polished off with a regional specialty; baked coffee cheese served with cloudberries and browned butter ice cream.
Sleep
Ripan's cosy, chalet-style rooms are delightfully Scandinavian, all clean lines and simple colour schemes. Hotel Cabin Kiruna rooms are ideal for couples, while the slightly larger Giron cabins feature two separate rooms and a small kitchenette, and are perfect for families. All rooms come with TV, telephone and internet access as standard.
Do
This being Swedish Lapland, there's no shortage of Arctic adventures, with dogsledding, snowmobile tours and Northern Lights hunts grabbing the winter headlines. Then in summer, attention turns to moose safaris, white-water rafting, Sami cultural tours and horse rides under the midnight sun. Then, at the end of each adventurous day, you'll return to an indoor and outdoor pool, mineral sauna, mountain stream, aroma sauna, bar and relaxation lounge, all part of the indulgent Aurora Spa.
