Reykjavik is a pretty coastal city with a cultured heart. Woolly-jumper-wearing hipsters skip around record shops while sharp suits sip cocktails in stylish bars. This short break combines a stay in the city with two nights at ION Hotel, a contemporary design hotel in the Thingvellir National Park. A designer hotel, less than an hour’s drive from the bustle of Reykjavik, ION effortlessly treads the fine line between luxury and adventure. And, with its Thingvellir National Park location, there’s activities aplenty from challenging glacier treks to days spent off-roading the south coast.

Day 1 » Thingvellir National Park
Fly from London to Iceland’s Keflavík Airport, collect your hire car and drive to the ION Hotel in the Thingvellir National Park, perhaps stopping along the way for a dip in the Blue Lagoon. Once you've checked in, perhaps head to the spa and unwind with a treatment, or take a relaxing dip in the heated lagoon. Then, head to the restaurant for a journey through Iceland’s gastronomic landscape with fresh, regional ingredients heading up a menu that changes with the seasons. All told, it's the perfect preamble to the day of adventure that awaits.

Your hire car gives you freedom to roam and discover this spectacular region at your own pace. Meanwhile, the hotel offers the chance for further adventure with a programme of activities that includes SuperJeep journeys, helicopter flights, glacier hikes and horse-back riding.

Days 3-4 » Reykjavik
After a leisurely morning, or perhaps another excursion, drive to Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. Checking into Hotel Borg, you'll spend two days exploring the city, visiting the extraordinary Hallgrímskirkja church and the Reykjavik Art Museum, and enjoying the atmosphere of the city’s boisterous bars and excellent restaurants; the Grillmarket is one of our favourites, but it’s popular, so you’ll need to book in advance.
