The escapist and elegant Malangen Resort is a year-round wilderness hotel offering thrilling adventures in one of Scandinavia's most scenic locations. The resort overlooks the Malangenfjord, which stretches 60km from the Hekkingen Lighthouse to the small village of Nordfjordbotn and is renowned for its vast shoals of herring and coalfish. Hiking trails lead from the hotel right into the region’s interior and, in the winter months, Malangen excels at Northern Lights excursions, dog sledding and snowmobile safaris.
Eat
There is a strong French influence in the food served at the Malangen’s restaurant. Expect the finest ingredients sourced from the richly-stocked waters, fertile valley floors and mountainsides around the resort to be served up with a little nonchalant flair, and of course plenty of well-matched wine
Sleep
Ten stylish and comfortable Standard and Superior rooms line the top floor of the Malangen’s central building, all featuring wooden floors and large windows. Even better, however, are the Sea-view cabins, right on the rocks by the water, gazing straight out over the spectacular Malangenfjord. These are utterly enchanting, with either private balconies or large windows lining the lounges, and in the deluxe versions, both, to make even more of the views.
Do
Malangen is a stunning location where sheer mountains meet sea and forests cover almost every other inch. Explore this gorgeous landscape on a husky or snowmobile safari, coasting out over frozen lakes and around snow-laden firs for an epic experience you’ll never forget, or make like a fisherman and cast off, carving a hole in the ice through which to dip your rod. And of course, this far north, the fabled Aurora Borealis make regular appearances, so let a guide lead you to the best spots to see them lighting up the landscape with their haunting illuminations.
