Up in the far northwestern corner of Sweden lies a stunning region of impressive mountains and glassy lochs. The Björkliden Resort on the southern banks of Torneträsk is the prettiest spot in the region, and at 1,228 metres above sea level, Låktatjåkko is Sweden's highest mountain lodge. A visit here is sure to fulfil every fantasy: eat a gourmet meal in the middle of nowhere, enjoy the Northern Lights from the closest possible vantage point or try your hand at an array of fun Arctic sports.
Eat
Gazing around the fells with nobody else for company you might think you'd have to go hungry for the evening, but the delicious three-course dinners at Låktatjåkko consist of hearty Nordic fare, with some international favourites thrown in alongside healthy salads and tasty puddings. The lodge kitchen also bakes fresh Låkta waffles, lunches and snacks and can prepare a picnic for your hikes.
Sleep
For a night surrounded by the empty fells and the knowledge that there is literally no one else around, this is perfect. The lodge’s ten rooms are functional and cosy, and fairly simple in terms of decoration and amenities – after all, you are staying in the middle of nowhere!
Do
Every activity you do choose to partake in will be in tune with the fabulous landscape. Gaze out over the hillsides and let your imagination run wild. Every bit of winter apparatus is at your disposable from the simple snowshoe to the snarling snowmobile, so kit up with thermal gear and get out and enjoy it! In winter or summer, no hike is complete without a visit to the vast caves and underground waterfalls of Kåppasjåkk.
