The Golden Circle represents some of Iceland's most spectacular scenery, from mighty waterfalls to explosive geysers and a thousand-year-old national-park history.

You’ll start by being picked up at your accommodation, leaving the city behind for the journey on to Thingvellir National Park. Here, your expert guide will show you just why this rift valley is much more than the UNESCO-listed pretty face of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. It is, after all, the Viking site of the world’s first parliament. You’ll then continue on to Gullfoss. Featuring twin tiers of cascading torrents, it’s one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls and a great spot for lunch. Your next stop is equally impressive – the world’s original geyser. Here, you can almost set your watch by Strokkur’s eruptions, while bubbling mud pools and colourful algae deposits add extra intrigue. While these three sights are the Golden-Circle staple, you’ll also be treated to Skálholt cathedral’s archaeological museum, along with Faxi waterfall and its “fish ladder” that lets salmon swim upstream. And, at the end of it all, you’ll be dropped back at your hotel.

Contact a Best Served specialist for alternative options, whether you want to take in the Golden Circle's delight by 4WD Superjeep, self-drive or on a private, tailored trip.

Why are there no ice hotels in Iceland?

It's rather ironic that Iceland, the 'land of ice and fire', contains zero ice hotels. But what it lacks in ice it more than makes up for in national park-framed lodges and private lagoon hotels. Still hankering to sleep on a bed made of snow? The neighbouring Nordics have more than enough.
