Whether it’s romance, cosy comfort or family entertainment you’re looking for, a Swedish log cabin makes the most of the rural idyll, with plenty to do and see. Retreat to your roaring log fire after a day in the winter snow, or use your front porch as a launch pad for summer hikes and days spent on a crystalline lake.

Låktatjåkko Mountain Lodge

For rugged, high-elevation scenery, Sweden’s highest mountain lodge is an excellent choice. Winter skiing and summer walks make for fun-filled days while seasonal evenings offer an excellent vantage point for stunning Northern Lights displays. There are just ten cosy rooms meaning that its wilderness location remains unspoilt – there’s even hikes to the vast caves and underground waterfalls of Kåppasjåkk.

Sörbyn Lodge

Set right on the picturesque shores of Swedish Lapland’s Lake Vitträsket, Sörbyn Lodge offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy a spot of fishing. Its forests are also home to everything from mink to moose, making for delightful snowmobile excursions, perhaps in search of the aurora borealis. Return to roaring open fires, sessions in the sauna and locally foraged food.

Brändön Lodge

Sea-facing cabins overlook the Gulf of Bothnia and onto the Luleå archipelago at Brändön Lodge where accommodation comes with small kitchens and a covered porch. Pick berries in summer or take part in activities that range from sea kayaking and caving to whitewater rafting and beach barbecues. Come winter, guests can choose between dogsledding, reindeer safaris, snowmobiling and snowshoeing while courses including ice sculpting, igloo building and ice building. Or, just spend your afternoon relaxing in the sauna.

Luleå

The Luleå archipelago – where islands outnumber people – is a beautiful coastal wilderness. In the winter, sea ice stands up to ten metres tall. Perhaps enjoy a stay at Jopikgården, where chefs showcase the finest local flavours with freshly caught local salmon, garnished in berries and mushrooms picked on a neighbouring island. Stay in a rustic bungalow, furnished with antiques, and engage in sea kayaking, fishing expeditions, seal watching and bike or hiking tours. Warm up in the sauna or outdoor wood-fired hot tub under the stars and possibly the Northern Lights.

Alternatively, stay at Pine Bay Lodge, fronted by frozen pack ice and backed by pine forests. Meet fellow guests round the oversized fireplace and enjoy gourmet cuisine matched with excellent wine. With just eight guest rooms, the lodge is perfectly intimate with activities including snowmobile and dogsled safaris, perhaps in chase of the famed lights.
