Experience Greenland's icebergs & glaciers during the beautiful Arctic autumn

» 10 day tailor-made break

» Price from: £4,790

This authentic journey through Greenland pairs the country's dramatic iceberg-dotted coastline with its most fascinating towns and regions, from quirky capital Nuuk to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord. Accompanied by a knowledgeable tour guide throughout, you'll pair ocean-view flights with local cruise ship adventures as you island hop along Greenland's coast, witnessing giant calving icebergs, walking on the colossal Greenland Ice Sheet and spotting the likes of humpback and minke whales. You'll stay in some of Greenland's most iconic accommodation, including an en-suite cabin on board the famous Sarfaq Ittuk sailboat and an ocean-view pod at Hotel Arctic. It's all wrapped up in the kaleidoscopic colours of an Arctic autumn – there's even chances to spot the Northern Lights – and bookended in colourful Copenhagen where you'll stay right on its famous harbour.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » UK to Copenhagen

Fly to Copenhagen from the UK where, on arrival, you'll transfer to 71 Nyhavn. Right on Copenhagen's harbour, you're just a few strolls from the city's most famous sites, from the Amalienborg Palace to the charming garden square of Kongens Nytorv. Tonight, perhaps sample the nearby Restaurant Pakhuskælderen for the likes of Danish beef and deliciously fresh seafood from the Øresund taking pride of place in a French-inspired menu.

    Stay: 71 Nyhavn, Copenhagen

  • Day 2 » Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq

After breakfast, transfer back to the airport in time for your flight to Greenland's Kangerlussuaq, where a birds-eye view on board affords you the first glimpse of Greenland's dramatic coastline below. You'll be welcomed by a tour guide on arrival who'll whisk you away to the Greenland Ice Sheet – the second largest body of ice in the world after the Antarctic ice sheet and the size of western Europe. As you walk on the ice, passing colossal glaciers, spot reindeer and oxen as your guide explains more about the area's flora and fauna. Check in to Hotel Kangerlussuaq tonight and enjoy an included dinner at the excellent restaurant for a showcase of local flavours from the region – think roe with rye bread, baked redfish and local muskox.

    Stay: Hotel Kangerlussuaq

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 3 » Kangerlussuaq to Nuuk

Fly from Kangerlussuaq to Nuuk today to board the sailboat Sarfaq Ittuk, a passenger ferry that sails up and down the country's west coast and is even used by local Greenlanders. Anchor in to quirky capital of Nuuk where you'll have time to explore the city's Sermitsiaq mountain and surrounding fjords, with an included sightseeing tour that will see you pause at the Greenland National Museum and Old Town's colonial harbour. Then, back on board, you'll head north as you settle in to your cosy en-suite cabin, taking in the autumn scenery from the panoramic lounge. Just remember to pack a camera and binoculars – as well as your warm clothes!

    Stay: Sarfaq Ittuk

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 4 » At sea & visit Sisimiut

Your journey north to Ilulissat continues today as you call in to the local villages of Maniitsoq and Kangaamiut and their lively harbours before arriving in Greenland’s second largest town, Sisimiut, tonight. All colourful houses and dramatic rocky landscapes, you'll have time to explore the local museum and the Old Town before reembarking the ship for dinner.

    Stay: Sarfaq Ittuk

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Days 5-7 » Ilulissat

A true trip highlight awaits over the next few days as you explore Ilulissat, home to the iconic Disko Bay and UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ilulissat Icefjord. We'd highly recommend a hike to Sermermiut, an old settlement at the mouth of the ice fjord, where giant icebergs sit stranded on an old moraine. Enjoy everything from locally-guided tours to learn about local settlements to crisp walks among the icy fjords. Then, come evening, head out on cruises among the icebergs and Arctic autumn colours under – with luck – the Northern Lights, as well as on whale safaris to spot humpbacks, minke and fin whales. Return each night to one of Greenland’s most famous hotels, where fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding fjords are the setting for two excellent restaurants and a large outdoor terrace, perfect for a sundowner or two.

    Stay: Hotel Arctic, Greenland

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 8 » Eqi Glacer

After breakfast today, head out on a full-day tour to the calving Eqi Glacier. After boarding a local boat, spotting whales, seals and unique bird life among enormous waterfalls, you'll stop to witness the giant pieces of ice breaking off into the water in a thunderous crash. You may also like to explore the local museum and go shopping at one of the local souvenir shops before a final farewell dinner at Hotel Arctic.

    Stay: Hotel Arctic, Greenland

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 9 » Return to Copenhagen

After breakfast you'll fly to Copenhagen via Kangerlussuaq, arriving this evening. Check back in to the 71 Nyhavn for your final evening and toast your holiday with a dinner at one of the city's many fine dining restaurants.

    Stay: 71 Nyhavn, Copenhagen

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 10 » Copenhagen to UK

After breakfast, transfer to the airport in time for your flight back to the UK.
