It’s a little-known fact that autumn in Finnish Lapland offers some of the finest Northern Lights viewings. The September equinox marks a higher activity, while the milder weather means clearer skies and warmer temperatures. And, your log-cabin-style accommodation is perfectly poised to take them in from its remote lakeside location, where you'll enjoy hearty full-board delicacies among an old-growth forest. It’s all showcased on a full range of included excursions, featuring a guided hike, aurora hunt and cultural appreciation of the region’s indigenous Sámi peoples.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » Depart UK for Lapland

Flying out to the depths of Finnish Lapland, you’ll be met at the airport by an included transfer and brought, through dense evergreen forests, to your wood-clad accommodation. While your room is a cosy delight of exposed timber and plush fabrics, you can also upgrade to a log cabin or aurora dome, where glass ceilings showcase spectacular Northern Lights displays. Whatever you choose, you’ll also be treated to the first of your full-board meals with a dinner of local delicacies. Expect the likes of reindeer tartare and king crab soup, served to gorgeous views of tree-clad Lake Inari. Come nightfall, keep your eyes out for aurora appearances.

Today, after a hearty Finnish breakfast, you’ll start your programme of included activities with a guided cultural tour. It all begins at Siida Sámi Museum, showcasing the hardy past and present of these semi-nomadic reindeer herders with exhibits that range from archaeological artefacts to colourful clothing. You’ll then enjoy a sightseeing tour of Inari village, taking in its parish charm set among beautiful Lapland wilderness. This evening, you’ll then head out on an aurora hunt, your guide making use of the forecast to bring you out to a specially chosen wilderness spot, where you’ll toast the magical display with warm drinks and snacks.

Fuelled up from breakfast, you’ll set off on a guided hike through the surrounding wilderness. Your expert host will bring the scenery to life as your relaxing walk takes you through the forests and up rolling fells for ranging views over the Lapland countryside, dotted with shimmering lakes. With a bit of luck, you’ll even spot reindeer before you settle down for an included lunch by an open fire. The rest of the day is left free for you to explore at your own pace. Perhaps borrow a bike to rush through the forest trails or hit the waters on a canoe or kayak. Alternatively, make like a local and try your hand at foraging.
