We love this itinerary, not least for its combination of a true back-to-nature experience coupled with an appreciation of one of Europe’s best-loved capitals. It all begins with a stay at Stockholm’s iconic King’s Garden Hotel, from where you’ll explore the city’s charming old town, myriad museums and fine-dining eateries. It’s then time to swap city life for a secluded cabin on a private island in Sweden's rural heartland, enjoying the likes of lake dips, kayak paddles and cook-your-own campfire dinners.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » UK to Stockholm

Fly to Stockholm and make your way to the King’s Garden Hotel, which we recommend for its Gustavian architecture, chandelier-adorned rooms and quiet location that’s still within walking distance of all of Stockholm’s gems.

    Stay: King's Garden Hotel, Stockholm

  • Day 2 » Explore Stockholm

After a pancake breakfast in the hotel courtyard, you’ll have a full day to explore the delights of Stockholm. Not to be missed are the royal palace and old-town delights of Gamla Stan, as well as museums such as the Vasa and open-air Skansen. If you'll be visiting several, it's well worth grabbing a 24-hour Stockholm Card, which gives you easy access to many of the major sights. Other options include a boat trip out through the archipelago to Artipelag – a contemporary cultural centre with a renowned waterside restaurant – while over in the Sodermalm district you'll find quirky artist studios and boutiques. With summer Stockholm's busiest season, we recommend booking ahead for dinner this evening. Perhaps try the casual-bistro delights of Nomad or a fine-dining favourite such as Lilla Ego, for the likes of juniper-smoked turbot and blackened scallops.

    Stay: King's Garden Hotel, Stockholm

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 3 » Stockholm to KABIN

After breakfast, board a train to Ockedlbo, where you'll be picked up and taken on a boat transfer across to your private island and eco-luxury KABIN. After being shown around by your hosts, you'll be left entirely to your own devices for the next 48 hours, kept company only by the beauty of Lake Fjärden and the island's unspoilt forest. Perhaps take your canoe out for a spin on the lake before settling in to your cosy cottage, all white wood-clad walls and bathrooms with eco-friendly organic products. It's all encircled by a large wraparound terrace. And. while the bathroom and kitchen have both hot and cold running water, your stay is considered 'low-impact', meaning minimal water and electricity. A supply of firewood is prepared for you before you stay, so you can stay warm and cosy around the open fire. Come evening, you'll select a recipe and, using the locally sourced, organic ingredients provided, cook your own delicious dinner on a gas or wood stove.

NB: You are provided ingredients but will make your own meals. Guests are requested not to bring personal bath or healthcare products or any type of food packaging, to align with KABIN's minimum waste philosophy.

    Stay: KABIN

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 4 » Exploring your private island

After making your own breakfast, you'll enjoy free day of island exploration – a rare chance to switch off, do nothing and embrace the beauty of your surroundings. Between dips in the lake, picking wild berries and chopping wood before making your own lunch and dinner, it's a delightful contrast to the hustle and bustle of life back home. Don’t worry, though, if you do need assistance, the island's owners are always contactable and the cottage comes with a mobile charger – but you'll more likely want to spend time around the fire, taking in the near-silent surrounds of the lake and forest.

    Stay: KABIN

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 5 » Return to the UK

After breakfast it's time to return to the real world feeling relaxed, refreshed, and a little closer to nature. After a boat transfer to the mainland, head to the station to go back to Stockholm airport and catch your flight back home.

    Meals: Breakfast
