Dalarna is pure Sweden and the cultural heartland of the country. Currently the preserve of the Swedes, this is your chance to experience a traditional Swedish lifestyle including cabin and farm stays. Experience everything from immersive nature hikes and guided mine tours to majestic Lake Siljan and its surrounding villages, all with a distinctly authentic Swedish flavour. Round it all off with adventurous activities, including stand-up paddle-boarding and a kickbike tour with huskies.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » UK to Stockholm

    Fly to Stockholm from the UK and head to the city centre, where you’ve got the rest of the day at leisure. Check in to your cosy boutique hotel ideally located near to the Old Town and all major attractions. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the charms of Stockholm. Be sure to explore the cobblestone streets, boutiques and 18th-century palace buildings of Gamla Stan and the restaurants and café's of the pretty harbour.

  • Days 2-3 » Falun

    Enjoy breakfast this morning before making your way to the central station for a train journey to Falun, a historic city deep in Dalarna county, in the centre of the country. Arrive in the afternoon following a 3 hour journey through rolling countryside and picturesque lakes, where a short walk will take you to your central hotel in a charming part of Falun city, within easy reach of its World Heritage sites. After settling in, why not visit Dalarna museum and learn about the fascinating history of Dalarna as the first region of Sweden. It is also possible to book an additional guided city tour or a traditional sauna experience if time permits. Back at the hotel, enjoy an included evening meal.

    Pick up your included rental car the following morning, heading first to Carl Larsson Gard for a guided tour of this famous late 19th-century Swedish artist. Then, it's on to the historic Falun mine, where you will have lunch in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage site. After lunch, you'll have time for a guided tour of the famous mine which once produced over two-thirds of Europe's copper. If there's still time, perhaps opt for an optional guided stand-up paddle-boarding tour on the city centre river before returning to your hotel for the night.

  • Day 4 » Rättvik

    After a leisurely breakfast take the short drive to the small town of Grycksbo, where you'll enjoy a kickbike tour behind trained Siberian huskies, taking in impressive countryside views. Even in the summers, the local husky farms are open for visitors to spend the day in nature with these happy dogs. This afternoon, continue towards the eastern shore of Lake Siljan to the small town of Rättvik. Owing to its beautiful spot on a calm bay, it boasts a long history in attracting Swedish tourists and is best known as the birthplace of Sweden's first tourist hotel back in 1894. Explore the town on an included tour, weaving through narrow, winding roads, through picturesque villages and passing typical red painted cottages. Stop for lunch in a scenic spot before returning to the town to check in to your central hotel.

  • Days 5-6 » Furudal

    Depart Rättvik to nearby Furudal, ready to join a guided nature hike in the Styggforsen reserve. The unique environment here has given rise to several imaginative tales. Trolls and thieves are said to have lived in the caves below the waterfall, with giants rumoured to have ruled and reigned the woods. Discover the mysterious forest and its hidden waterfall, stopping in between for a traditional lunch and waffles in the middle of the forest. Afterwards, set off for your unique accommodation, where after checking in, you'll learn how to make typical delicious Swedish cinnamon buns in a workshop. Inspired by the principles of modern space design, a beautiful cabin on the grounds of an old farmhouse is tonight's accommodation. Here, you'll relish a secluded location with beautiful views overlooking the farm's old meadow. Tuck in to a delicious dinner in the farmhouse, with a chance to make your own pizza in the outdoor oven. 

    Enjoy a relaxing start on the farm the following morning before a wilderness excursion in the deep forests of Dalarna. With lunch at an abandoned village, you'll explore the forest, learn about the area's history and spot local wildlife. Spend the rest of your afternoon at leisure, after which you'll settle down for a traditional Swedish tapas dinner at the farmhouse.

  • Day 7 » Fryksås

    Travel through the beautiful lush green landscapes and scenic forests of central Dalarna to Fryksås. Continue your immersive Swedish experience as you check in to your private cabin accommodation in Fryksås. Today is free to explore the surroundings. Enjoy views over the valley and lake, hike the lush forest or take a swim in a nearby lake. This evening you'll tuck into your final dinner at Fryksas Hotel.

  • Day 8 » Depart Dalarna

    After a final breakfast, drive to Falun – approximately 1.5 hours – returning your rental car before catching the train to Stockholm Arlanda airport in time for your return flight home.
