Gothenburg is considered to be one of Sweden’s most attractive cities; full of beautiful architecture and charming cafés, it’s a superior city break destination, especially over Christmas when its famous markets draw festive revellers from all over. See itinerary ideas
With a more laidback atmosphere than Stockholm, the city is also better connected to the rest of Europe, especially Copenhagen in Denmark.
The heart of the city is the Old Town, centred on Gustav Adolf Square, which is named after the city’s founder. All of Gothenburg’s main attractions are then within easy walking distance of here; the Maritime and City museum in particular are worth a visit as is the opera house and main shopping district.
Additionally, admire some of Sweden’s cutting edge contemporary design at the Röhsska Design Museum, look out for the iconic Poseidon statue in Gotsplasen and discover the lively area of Avenyn or the historic district of Haga.
With a little more time, board a boat to cruise along the Bohuslan Coast or take a short trip to the island town of Marstrand, both of which are ideal outings during the warm summer months.
