Named after the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, where HX Hurtigruten Expeditions first sailed to in 1896, MS Spitsbergen joined the Hurtigruten fleet in 2016 after a total reconstruction. It’s a ship geared specifically for sailing in polar waters in remote parts of the Arctic, which it’s able to access thanks to its compact size and maneuverability, allowing passengers to visit spectacular destinations that cannot be reached by land or by air. With its comfortable cabins and communal areas, superb on-board dining and highly experienced expedition team, MS Spitsbergen will take you on a voyage well beyond the ordinary.
Eat
All HX Hurtigruten Expeditions cruises on MS Spitsbergen are all-inclusive, with meals served in Restaurant Aune. Breakfast is always served buffet-style, while lunch and dinner vary between buffet service and set menus, with an emphasis on high quality, locally sourced produce. It’s also possible to enjoy your meals in the comfort and privacy of your cabin by taking advantage of the onboard takeaway service. Meal times are announced in the daily programme. Wine, beer, spirits, soft drinks, tea and coffee are available in the restaurant and in the Explorer Lounge and Bar.
Sleep
MS Spitsbergen offers three accommodation options. The most indulgent are the ultra-spacious Expedition Suites with bed combinations for up to four guests, featuring private balconies, expansive windows and a mini bar (extra charge applies). Daily turn-down service and laundry are also included, along with Champagne on ice and a platter of delicacies as you set sail. The Arctic Superior cabins are an ideal choice for two people seeking a little extra space, while the Polar Inside and Outside cabins are a more compact and affordable option. All suites and cabins have their own ensuite bathroom with a shower and complimentary toiletries, as well as tea and coffee-making facilities, a TV, a safe and European two-pin plug sockets. Another consideration is whether you’d like a cabin with a view, or whether you’re happy to go without. The total capacity of the ship is 220, although passenger numbers are limited to 200 when visiting Svalbard due to local restrictions. Free Wi-Fi is available onboard.
Do
When you’re not out on the observation deck taking in the scenery and looking out for wildlife, you’ll no doubt spend plenty of time relaxing in the Explorer Lounge and Bar, which has plenty of comfortable seating and large, panoramic windows. Daily presentations and lectures are hosted here daily by scientists and wildlife experts, who’ll provide a fascinating insight into the climate, geology and ecosystems of the places you’ll be visiting. In the Science Centre, meanwhile, you’ll find a range of high-tech gadgets, a small library and workshop spaces, also designed for you to interact with the onboard expedition team and deepen your knowledge of the areas you explore on the cruise. The ship also has a sauna, a hot tub and a fitness room with the likes of treadmills, rowing machines, exercise bikes and free weights. Although the majority of your time will be spent onboard, there’s also ample opportunity to depart the ship on a series of guided excursions, such as hikes, kayaking trips and small boat tours. Some of these are included, while others are available to add to your itinerary for a supplement.
